What is an Electro Optical Modulator

What is an Electro Optical Modulator
An Electro Optical Modulator (EOM modulator) is an optoelectronic device that modulates light waves using the electro-optic effect (mainly the linear electro-optic effect, also known as the Pockels effect). Its core function is to quickly and accurately change the phase, intensity, and polarization state of the laser beam by applying an electrical signal (voltage), thereby “loading” the electrical signal onto the light wave, achieving control and information loading of the optical signal.

1. Working principle of Electro Optical Modulator
Physical basis: In specific electro-optic crystals (such as lithium niobate LiNbO 3, lithium tantalate LiTaO 3, potassium dihydrogen phosphate KD * P, etc.), an external electric field will cause a linear change in the refractive index of the crystal (the change in refractive index is proportional to the strength of the electric field).
Modulation mechanism: Changes in refractive index can alter the phase of light waves propagating in crystals (phase modulation), or convert phase changes into intensity changes through specific optical structures (such as Mach Zehnder interferometers) (intensity modulation), or change the polarization state of light through crystal anisotropy (polarization modulation).

2. The main modulation types of Electro Optical Modulator
2.1Phase modulator: With the simplest structure, the refractive index is directly changed by voltage, causing the output light phase to change linearly with voltage while the light intensity remains basically unchanged. It is commonly used in precision measurement fields such as laser frequency stabilization and quantum optics.
2.2Intensity modulator: Mach Zehnder interferometer (MZI) structure is commonly used to achieve linear or nonlinear (on/off) changes in light intensity with voltage by changing the phase difference of the interferometer arm through voltage. It is the most mainstream modulation method in high-speed optical communication.
2.3Polarization modulator: Utilizing the difference in crystal electro-optic effect in different directions to change the polarization state of light, commonly used in optical switches or polarization state switching.

3. Typical application areas of EOM modulator
3.1High speed optical communication: As the core component of optical modules, it is used for signal encoding (such as intensity modulation and phase modulation) in fiber optic communication systems.
3.2Laser system: used for laser Q-switching (generating high-energy pulses), active mode locking, laser frequency stabilization (such as PDH frequency stabilization), etc.
3.3Microwave photonics and optical sensing: used for generating and manipulating high-speed RF signals, fiber optic sensing (such as fiber optic gyroscopes, distributed fiber optic sensing), etc.
3.4Quantum information processing: used for phase/polarization modulation, optical frequency comb generation, etc. in quantum key distribution (QKD).
Electro Optical Modulator is the core component of modern optoelectronic systems, and with the development of new integrated platforms such as thin-film lithium niobate (TFLN Modulator), EOM is evolving towards higher speed, compactness, and lower power consumption.
