What is Rof over Fiber
1、 Definition of RF over Fiber(RFOF)
RF over Fiber transmission module is a specialized transmission equipment that integrates RF signal processing and fiber optic communication technology. Its core is to combine RF signals with fiber optic transmission links through optoelectronic conversion mechanisms, breaking through the limitations of distance and anti-interference in traditional RF signal transmission.
2、 The core functions of RF over Fiber
Bidirectional photoelectric signal conversion realizes the bidirectional conversion of RF signals and optical signals: the transmitting end modulates and loads the input RF signal onto an optical carrier through devices such as laser diodes, converts it into an optical signal, and sends it to the fiber optic link; The receiving end uses components such as photodiodes to demodulate and restore the optical signal transmitted through the fiber optic cable into an RF signal, which is then received and processed by the backend equipment.
Long distance high-quality RF signal transmission relies on the characteristics of low attenuation and anti electromagnetic interference of optical fibers. On the premise of ensuring the fidelity and low noise of RF signal waveforms, it realizes long-distance transmission of RF signals. The transmission distance can be extended from hundreds of meters to hundreds of kilometers, solving the pain points of large signal attenuation and susceptibility to electromagnetic interference in traditional coaxial cable transmission.
Signal optimization and conditioning include built-in amplifiers, filters, and other signal conditioning circuits to amplify and filter RF signals before and after transmission, optimizing signal quality: improving signal dynamic range, reducing noise figure, ensuring stable strength and purity of signals after long-distance transmission, and meeting signal transmission needs in different scenarios.
3、 How does it work
Central station: responsible for generating and processing optical carriers carrying RF signals, where complex equipment is concentrated.
Fiber optic transmission: Optical signals are transmitted to the far end through optical fibers.
Remote base station: only performs photoelectric conversion, restores optical signals into radio frequency electrical signals, amplifies them, and sends them to users through antennas; The uplink is reversed.
4、 Where is it mainly used
5G/Mobile Communication: Supporting high-frequency and high bandwidth wireless coverage is one of the key supporting technologies for 5G.
WiFi distribution system: providing long-distance and large-scale WiFi coverage in large factories, hospitals, smart buildings, and other places.
Smart grid: a communication network used for transmission, transformation, and distribution of electricity.
Transportation field: Vehicle ground high-speed communication for high-speed trains and highways.
Satellite communication and military: transmitting broadband microwave/radio frequency signals to enhance system security.
5、 Current technological challenges
The integration of optical and wireless chips (SOC) and high-speed microwave devices is still relatively lacking.
The 60GHz system has large antenna volume, heavy weight, and high cost.
The application scenarios are still relatively single and lack the technological foundation for large-scale development.
